Mellanox Unveils 200Gb/s HDR InfiniBand Solutions

by Lyle Smith

Mellanox has unveiled the ConnectX-6 adapters, touted as the world's first 200Gb/s data center interconnect solutions. Combined with quantum switches, LinkX cables and transceivers, these new adapters offer a complete 200Gb/s HDR InfiniBand interconnect infrastructure designed for the next generation of high-performance computing, machine learning, big data, cloud, web 2.0 and storage platforms. Back in September, Mellanox announced that they reached 1.2Tb/s in data communication bandwidth on a high-performance Windows Server 2016 storage solution.

Leveraging single/dual-port 200Gb/s Virtual Protocol Interconnect ports options, the new ConnectX-6 adapters offers twice the data speed compared to the company’s previous generation. In addition, it is compatible with both the InfiniBand and the Ethernet standard protocols and can connect with virtually any CPU architecture. Mellanox claims that they are able to boast 200 million messages per second, have ultra-low latency of 0.6usec, and support in-network computing engines including MPI-Direct, RDMA, GPU-Direct, SR-IOV, data encryption. Moreover, with their Multi-Host technology, Mellanox also indicates that ConnectX-6 will allow for the industry’s most efficient compute and storage platforms.

The Quantum 200Gb/s HDR InfiniBand switch supports 40-ports of 200Gb/s InfiniBand or 80-ports of 100Gb/s InfiniBand connectivity; this comes to an ample total of 16Tb/s of switching capacity. Due to its low latency of 90ns, Mellanox believes they will also significantly improve the support of in-network computing technology, giving organizations optimized and flexible routing engines.

Availability

Mellanox 200Gb/s HDR solutions are slated for a general availability sometime in 2017 and will be demonstrating this technology at SC16 in Salt Lake City. To offer end-to-end 200Gb/s InfiniBand infrastructure, Mellanox plans to offer a line of 200Gb/s copper and Silicon Photonics fiber cables.
