Synology has announced the immediate availability of the FS3410 dual-purpose NAS and SAN solution, the company’s latest addition to their FlashStation line of all-flash network-attached storage servers.
The 2U 24-bay FS3410 is considered a mid-range 3000-series unit, so it features a balance of cost and power combined with comprehensive networking capabilities out-of-the-box. As such, Synology indicates the FS3410 is ideal for demanding high-performance storage, such as VM storage and protection, file syncing, and business application hosting.
The FS3410 is managed by Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) and is equipped with an Intel Xeon 8-core processor, four 1GbE RJ-45 ports/dual 10GbE ports right out of the box (upgradable to 25/40GbE through PCIe 3.0 expansion cards), and USB 3.2 Gen1 connectivity as shown below. You can also outfit the FS3410 with up to 128GB of DDR4 ECC RDIMM RAM with 16GB standard.
Performance-wise, it is quoted to deliver over 356,000 IOPS and 129,000 IOPS in 4K random reads and writes, respectively. With these speeds, Synology claims that it will work well as a file server, block storage, or light application server role that requires high availability and reliability.
The FS3410 is also fully certified to support VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer, OpenStack Cinder, and Kubernetes CSI. Its advanced storage management and LUN functionality (combined with VMware VAAI and Windows ODX support) can improve VM performance. In addition, it offers speedy snapshot creation, recovery, and cloning, while volume-level deduplication ensures highly efficient storage space reduction.
With Synology High Availability, the FS3410 can reach maximum service availability when paired with another identical unit to create a high-availability cluster. Moreover, the active/passive architecture makes the automatic service transition process complete very quickly, which helps to help prepare for unexpected downtime on one unit.
