Today Nexsan announced the release of two new features on its Unity solution, Unity Active Archive and Desktop. Active Archive will enable users to automatically archive unstructured data with policy-based guidelines. Not only does this allow companies to make their data even more secure, they can also enable their users to easily access the files and use features such as file sync and share, multi-site sync, and secure remote access via mobile devices and the web all without using a VPN.
For customers already using Unity Hyper-Unified storage, Active Archive gives them a secure archive for long-term unstructured data. Not only is Active Archive secure, it ensures users availability and integrity. These capabilities are delivered through Nexsan’s patented technology such as digital file fingerprinting and self-healing integrity audits. These technologies can help eliminate threats of data loss, tampering, and corruption, including brought on by one of the main security concerns today, ransomware. Active Archive also has the agility one would expect to find in the cloud featuring easy synchronization and sharing features.
Other features include:
- Fingerprints – Each time a file is saved, a unique fingerprint is generated using a combination of two cryptographic hashes on the contents and metadata, so history and contents cannot be altered after the fact (WORM storage)
- Serial Numbers – Each file is assigned a globally unique consecutive serial number which is used to ensure no files are missing or inappropriately added
- Secure Time – Tampering with the system time clock is prevented by using a global, redundant, secure time source
- Two Copies – Each file and its fingerprint are stored twice in the Unity Active Archive. The second copy is either stored in a separate RAID disk set in the same Unity Active Archive or on a remote Unity Active Archive
- Data Verification – Files are continually verified against their fingerprints, repaired using their copies and safeguarded by RAID disk arrays for days or decades
- Encryption – Files are protected in flight and at rest
- Remote Replication – Two active Unity Active Archive systems can continuously replicate to each other to protect against a site failure
- Failover/failback – Native active/active replication protects against site disasters with automatic read failover and manual write failover
- Performance & Capacity – Scale capacity up to multiple petabytes and add performance by using multiple Unity Active Archive storage systems together
Along with Unity Active Archive, Nexsan is also releasing Desktop that selectively syncs allowing users to choose the files they need when they are offline. This feature works on both Windows and Macintosh, and when they user comes back online the files will be synced back to Unity. All data remains under the full control of IT and users will only be able to access data where they have permission. Desktop comes at no additional fee.
