Today at VMworld 2017 in Las Vegas, Dell EMC announced that it intended to make it easier for companies to plan, deploy, and run desktop and application virtualization within their IT environments through the expansion of Dell EMC VDI Complete Solutions, powered by VMware Horizon. The expansion of this program will now include options with Horizon Apps as well as NVIDIA Tesla M10 and M60 GPU graphics accelerators. Dell EMC is also announcing a new Thin Client today, the Latitude 5280 mobile thin client.

Thin Clients are becoming more popular as the technology improves in performance, user experience, and security. Dell EMC is ready to give customers the tools they need with Dell EMC VDI Complete Solutions (announced at Dell EMC World 2017). These solutions are based on Dell EMC VxRail Appliances or Dell EMC VMware vSAN ReadyNodes with the option of Dell Wyse thin clients, Dell OptiPlex PCs or PCaaS as the endpoint. Now these solutions are available with Horizon Apps, which allows for high session density with up to 1,400 hosted apps, so more apps can be delivered to more users faster. Another interesting feature is the ability to enable IT to add, update, and retire applications in real time, and instantly roll out apps to all users or selected groups of users. To reduce endpoint resource requirements, end users will also be able to self-manage the apps.

As more companies look to Thin Clients for end user computing needs, they’ll have to deal with the fact that more and more applications are demanding great graphic resources, and this fact isn’t limited to something like Photoshop. To enable users to continue using graphic-rich applications (that can include things like Windows 10) the Dell EMC VDI Complete Solutions are now offered with NVIDIA virtual GPU options and NVIDIA GRID vPC software. Companies needing rich and responsive end-user experience for knowledge workers can leverage the NVIDIA Tesla M10 GPU accelerator. For those with more robust needs such as power users for intense applications like CAD/CAM, NVIDIA Quadro vDWS with Tesla M60 can be deployed. The new NVIDIV GPUs can be added as a single node or up to a four-node cluster, meaning that organizations will have the ability to add more as performance demands it.

The Latitude 5280 mobile thin client combines the manageability, performance, and security of Wyse thin clients Dell’s award-winning Latitude PCs. The Latitude 5280 mobile thin client is based on Windows 10 IOT enterprise, can support a broad range of applications and peripherals, and is ideal for the knowledge worker looking for a secure, mobile workspace.

Other key features include:

  • Enterprise-class performance: The Latitude 5280 is based on an Intel 7th generation, Core i5 processor with 8GB DDR4 RAM. It has extended battery life and a 12.5-inch, Full HD display, with the ability to support a 4K monitor via the optional docking station for ease of work in a variety of settings.
  • Broad connectivity: Supports a broad mix of peripheral attachments and network connections, including USB 3.1, RJ45, HDMI and VGA ports, and WLAN and Bluetooth connections. This is Dell’s first thin client with USB Type-C support, and also includes 3G and 4G cellular integration.
  • Software choice: Customers can connect to a variety of virtual desktop brokers including Citrix XenDesktop, Microsoft RDS and VMware Horizon.
