Testing Insights – G5 Cameras in Action

AI Detections

Across the G5 lineup, the AI detection capabilities were consistently reliable, reducing false alarms from day-to-day indoor office activities. The G5 Pro stood out with its more accurate and customizable AI functions, particularly in high-motion areas. The G4 PTZ Industrial also featured effective person tracking, enhancing its performance in various outdoor environments.A fun highlight from the G5 series is its person tracking, making the StorageReview office fridge a “hot topic” on the motion heatmap. What tasty treats are inside? Whether it’s leftovers or refreshing drinks, the G5 series watches this popular spot.

Night Vision and Low-Light Performance

Night vision was tested in various environments, and the G5 Dome Ultra and G4 PTZ Industrial offered superior performance. The G4 PTZ covers up to 91 m (300 ft), making it suitable for large outdoor spaces. The other models, like the G5 Bullet, G5 Pro, and G5 Turret, were not in areas where night vision could be effectively used, but their low-light performance was exceptional when most of the office lights were turned off.

The G5 Dome Ultra, installed in the office lunchroom with the lights off, utilizes its 2K resolution and 20 m (65 ft) IR night vision, showcasing its clarity in low-light conditions for this use case.

The G4 PTZ was put to the test. Its 91 m (300 ft) IR night vision captured clear images at 100–105 m, just over its rated specifications, on a dark highway, demonstrating its capability for long-range, low-light monitoring.

Stream Quality & Build Quality

The stream quality was excellent across the series, with the G5 Pro and G4 PTZ’s 4K resolutions providing top-notch clarity. Even the entry-level 2K (4MP) models like the G5 Turret Ultra, G5 Dome Ultra, and G5 Bullet offered sharp, detailed footage, making them reliable for general surveillance.

The G4 PTZ showcases its 8MP 3840 x 2160 (16:9) wide resolution fully zoomed out in a static position, viewing a busy highway.

Another shot of the G4 PTZ, featuring its 22x mechanical zoom and 4K resolution, clearly captures cars at a distance of 455.5 m from installation (approximately 1,494.4 ft) while testing at the camera’s maximum 22x zoom.

The G5 cameras are engineered for durability and feel robust and premium in hand. Constructed from aluminum alloy and UV-stabilized polycarbonate, they ensure longevity in various environments. Models like the G5 Dome Ultra and G5 Dome feature hard-coated domes that provide additional scratch resistance and protection from the elements. With high impact ratings and waterproofing, these cameras are designed for discreet indoor installations and can withstand the rigors of outdoor use.

Pictured is the G5 Pro, an example of Ubiquiti’s efforts in weatherproofing. It features a UV-stabilized polycarbonate body, an aluminum internal structure, and gaskets designed for outdoor durability.

Ease of Installation

All cameras in the G5 series we received were easy to install, thanks to their PoE (Power over Ethernet) power method, which streamlined the process by combining power and data into a single cable. Although additional accessories like junction boxes and flush mounts were available but not used in this review, the installation supplies provided in the box were more than sufficient, making the setup process straightforward and adaptable to various locations. The cameras were connected to the Pro Max 48-port PoE switch, which provided reliable power and connectivity.

Again, shout out to Kevin for his efforts in installing the cameras around the lab for these testing purposes. It was noted that the installation hardware and options were more than needed for the scenarios tested. Furthermore, the ease of adoption of the cameras into the existing system was seamless, requiring minimal configuration and integration effort. They were quickly integrated into the UNVR Pro (previously reviewed) and configured with UniFi Protect, allowing for quick access to live feeds and settings management, significantly enhancing the overall user experience. The flexible mounting options easily supported various environments, from small residential setups to larger commercial properties, providing an adaptable and hassle-free installation and setup process.

G5 Series Wrap Up

After hands-on experience with the Ubiquiti G5 series, it’s clear that they have developed a solid lineup of cameras tailored to diverse surveillance needs. Each model—whether the G5 Turret Ultra for its ultra-wide viewing angles, the G5 Pro with its high-end 4K resolution, or the cost-effective G5 Bullet—brings unique strengths to the table.

These cameras deliver strong AI capabilities and feature impressive build quality, ease of installation, and hassle-free integration with the UniFi Protect ecosystem. The addition of complementary hardware like the UNVR Pro and Pro Max 48-port PoE switch further elevates the setup for users with more demanding requirements. With such impressive features, the G5 series would undoubtedly excel in short-range outdoor surveillance and busy indoor environments. This balance of advanced functionality and practical usability makes it a compelling option for residential and enterprise-level systems.
