Proxmox VE 8.3 Key Technical Updates

The new release is based on Debian 12.8 (Bookworm) and utilizes the Linux kernel 6.8.12-4 by default, with an optional upgrade to kernel 6.11 for advanced users. It incorporates updated versions of several open-source virtualization technologies, including:

  • QEMU 9.0.2 for virtual machine emulation and performance enhancements.
  • LXC 6.0.0 for lightweight containerized environments.
  • ZFS 2.2.6, with patches to ensure compatibility with Linux kernel 6.11.

These updates will help with compatibility and improve overall performance for virtualized infrastructures.

Proxmox VE 8.3 Major Enhancements

  • Improved Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Firewall Integration: ProxmoxVE’s SDN stack, which supports virtual zones and networks (VNets) for multitenant environments, now works more seamlessly with its firewall features. The updated system can automatically generate IP sets for VNets and virtual guests via its IP address management plugin. These IP sets can be referenced directly in firewall rules, simplifying configuration and ongoing maintenance.

Based on nftables, the firewall has been enhanced to filter forwarded network traffic at both the host and VNet levels. This allows users to impose specific traffic restrictions, such as limiting SNAT traffic or managing cross-zone flows in complex environments.

  • Webhook Notifications for System Events: The Proxmox notification system now supports webhooks. This enables the platform to send HTTP requests triggered by specific events, such as system updates, cluster node alerts, or backup completions. Users can also configure custom headers and body content for these requests, allowing integration with any webhook-compatible service and enhancing automation and system monitoring.
  • Tag View for Simplified Resource Management: The new “Tag Vie” functionality in the resource tree enables users to group virtual guests by assigned tags. This feature provides a highly customizable overview, making managing and monitoring resources within the interface easier.
  • Support for Ceph Squid (Technology Preview): The release includes preliminary support for Ceph Squid 19.2.0 while maintaining compatibility with Ceph Reef 18.2.4 and Ceph Quincy 17.2.7. Administrators can select their preferred Ceph version during installation to suit their storage requirements.
  • Faster Container Backups: Backups for containers have been optimized by leveraging file change detection. Unchanged files are skipped during backup operations when using Proxmox Backup Server, significantly reducing the time required for backup tasks.
  • Streamlined Migration from Other Hypervisors: Proxmox VE now supports direct import of virtual machines in Open Virtualization Format (OVF) and Open Virtualization Appliance (OVA) formats through its web interface. Users can upload files locally or import them via URL. Additionally, an import wizard simplifies the migration process for virtual machines from other hypervisors, such as VMware, reducing the complexity of transitioning to Proxmox VE.

Availability and Licensing

Proxmox VE 8.3 is available for immediate download as an ISO image. This image includes the complete feature set and is installable on bare-metal systems. Users can install it on top of a Debian base or perform an in-place upgrade from previous versions using the apt package manager.

Proxmox VE is distributed as an open-source platform under the GNU Affero General Public License v3 (AGPLv3). Enterprise users seeking additional stability and support can subscribe to the Enterprise Repository, which offers thoroughly tested updates and technical assistance.
