Dell expands server lineup with new single-socket solutions for modern workloads.
Dell has expanded its server portfolio by introducing the PowerEdge R470 and R570, two single-socket servers designed to redefine performance and energy efficiency in modern data centers. Following the footsteps of the dual-socket R670 and R770 servers, these new models are powered by Intel Xeon 6 processors with energy-efficient E-cores to handle traditional and evolving workloads. Information about the PowerEdge R570 is limited as it isn’t scheduled for release until early 2025. Dell has stated the server will feature a scalable 2U design to support a broader range of workloads. The PowerEdge R470 is available now and fully detailed.
Dell PowerEdge R470
The PowerEdge R470 is a 1U, single-socket server that combines high performance with energy efficiency. It is tailored for workloads like cloud-scale microservices, data services, and scale-out databases. The server emphasizes compact design and power savings without compromising on computational capability. Its integration of the Intel Xeon 6 processor with up to 144 cores ensures optimized performance per watt, enabling organizations to achieve more within smaller data center footprints.
This server features 16 DDR5 DIMM slots supporting up to 1TB of memory at speeds of 6400 MT/s. Its storage options include up to eight EDSFF E3.S Gen5 NVMe SSDs or 2.5-inch SAS/SATA drives, providing flexibility for various data-intensive applications. Cooling is handled by advanced air-based systems, augmented by Dell’s Smart Power and Cooling Technology, ensuring long-term operational reliability while reducing environmental impact.
As with all PowerEdge servers, the R470 focuses on serviceability. It supports rear I/O hot aisle and front I/O cold aisle configurations, which are especially beneficial for quick maintenance access and ensure reduced downtime and operational interruptions. These design choices suit high-density rack deployments in growing data centers.
The front panel includes a USB 2.0 Type-C port for modern peripherals and an optional USB 2.0 Type-A port for additional flexibility. Optional features include a Mini-DisplayPort for video output, a DB9 serial port configured with front I/O, and a dedicated BMC Ethernet port for system management. The rear panel expands connectivity further, offering another dedicated BMC Ethernet port, two USB 3.1 Type-A ports for high-speed data transfers, and a VGA port for legacy display support.
Additionally, the R470 supports comprehensive security features, including cryptographically signed firmware, Silicon Root of Trust, and Secure Boot, creating a Zero Trust IT environment. Managed via Dell’s OpenManage portfolio, the server enables seamless monitoring, deployment, and scaling, aligning well with modern IT demands.
