Today Samsung Electronics, Ltd., announced that its Samsung PM1733 PCIe Gen4 Solid State Drive (SSD) and high density RDIMM and LRDIMM DRAM for the AMD EPYC 7002 Generation Processors. Since AMD launched its second generation EPYC Processor (codenamed Rome and also known as EPYC 7002), several vendors have announced support for the promising new technology.
AMD launched its second generation EPYC 7002 yesterday and the processors have already demonstrated their capabilities in the first review we completed leveraging a GIGBYTE server. The new CPUs have up to 64 “Zen 2” cores and deliver a comprehensive set of I/O, memory and security features as well as bring the support for Gen4 PCIe. On that last note, Samsung is announcing support for its new PCIe Gen 4-enabled PM1733 SSD. The PM1733 is said to have double the throughput capabilities of current Gen 3 SSDs, which would make it the highest performance SSD on the market. For performance the drive would be able to read sequentially at 8.0GB/s and randomly at 1500K IOPS.
The PM1733 leverages Samsung’s Gen5 512Gb TLC V-NAND. It will be available in two form factors: U.2 (Gen4 x4) and HHHL (Gen4 x8). The U.2 comes in capacities as high as 30.72TB and the HHHL comes in capacities as high at 15.36TB. The drives feature dual port capabilities for storage and server applications. And the PM1733 will be backward compatible with PCIe Gen 3 architectures.
Aside from SSD support for the AMD EPYC 7002, Samsung is also announcing a full lineup of RDIMM and LRDIMM DRAM products that support the new processors. These new DIMMs utilize component architectures of 8Gb and 16Gb DDR4 and come in capacities from 8GB to 256GB. Users can leverage up to 4TB of Samsung memory per AMD EPYC 7002 CPU.
Availability
The PM1733 SSD is expected to be available this quarter in both U.2 and HHHL form factors.
