Composable disaggregated infrastructure (CDI) is the move away from complex configuration and management of IT infrastructure to an easier to manage and significantly more streamlined management and deployment model.
Disaggregation happens by pooling hardware fabrics such as network, storage and compute into “resource” pools that are then managed by software. This allows for real time allocation of infrastructure resources that is independent from one another and that can be scaled up and down based on the individual needs of the application.

WD Openflex
CDI allows for better utilization of resources by leveraging resources over traditional IP switched networks as well as Fibre Channel. Having high performance and low latency storage will benefit all applications assigned. WD has announced Openflex as a way to start to focus specifically on composable disaggregated infrastructure and to leverage fast NVMe flash storage for the various resource pools.
Just as virtualization changed the way that we deploy and manage infrastructure, CDI has the potential to reduce the amount of time and effort required to manage resources across the enterprise by removing overlap and permitting dynamic reassignment of resources on the fly.
