Hitachi and Western Digital have recently announced products that finally hit the 100 GB/platter mark.

HGST’s Deskstar 7K500 utilizes the firm’s unique five-platter design in conjunction with 100 GB/platter disks to achieve a flagship capacity of 500 GB.

Western Digital, sticking with a more conservative three-platter design, manages 320 GB out of its workhorse Caviar line.

These products join Maxtor’s DiamondMax 10 / MaXLine III and Seagate’s Barracuda 7200.7 at the 100 GB/platter mark. Seagate, of course, is pulling ahead once again, promising 133 GB/platter densities for its high-capacity ‘Cuda 7200.8 family.
