Fujitsu’s New Enterprise Lineup

by storagereview

This week Fujitsu announces a trio of new SAS-based enterprise units as well as an extended-duty 2.5” SATA drive.

The 2.5” 147 GB MBB2147 lines up squarely against Seagate’s Savvio 10K.2 while the MBC2073 faces off with the Savvio 15K.1 in the high-performance arena.

A third offering, the MBA3300, retains the more traditional 3.5” form factor and as a result matches the 300-gigabyte capacity currently offered by the Cheetah 15K.5.

Last up is the SATA MHW2120BK, a 7200 RPM 2.5” drive that, while not matching the sheer capacity of today’s 160 GB+ models, is intended for 24/7 operation and thus may be more suitable for server-style use.

It’s good to see the competition continue to duke it out with industry-giant Seagate. Fujitsu in particular has a reputation of outstanding performance when it comes to SCSI-based drives; we’ll bring you looks at these latest units as soon as possible.

Fujitsu Launches Four New Hard Disk Drive Series For Enterprise and Entry Server Applications

High performing SAS Drives & Extended Duty Serial ATA Drives Designed for 24/7 Operation

Sunnyvale, CA, May 30, 2007 — Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc., one of the world’s leading suppliers of innovative computer products including
hard disk drives, peripherals and biometric security solutions, today announced four new hard disk drives (HDD) designed to
meet the needs of enterprise and entry server applications. Fujitsu’s Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and Serial ATA (SATA) hard
disk drives provide a one-stop solution for a broad range of applications, such as business to mission-critical, multi-drive
server, and storage system environments requiring 24/7 reliability and performance.

“Fujitsu is focused on understanding our customer’s storage needs for high capacity and reliable hard disk drives that meet
the growing demand for enterprise and entry server applications. Today we announce four new series of hard disk drives to
support customer growth and position Fujitsu at the forefront of the enterprise storage market,” said Joel Hagberg, vice president,
marketing and business development, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. “I believe that the new small form factor Serial
Attached SCSI drives complement Fujitsu’s established position in the enterprise storage market with industry-leading performance
and capacity inside a form factor that allows users to maximize the use of storage footprint, while reducing the energy consumption.”

Fujitsu has introduced a portfolio of three new enterprise class SAS drives designed to support mission critical server and
storage systems. The first hard disk drive in this series, the MBB2147/MBB2073, Fujitsu’s second generation SFF 10K SAS drive,
offers up to 147¹GB capacity at a rotational speed of 10,000RPM. This drive also has a load/unload head ramp that helps to
reduce handling damage. This hard disk drive series will be available in the second quarter of 2007.

  • Capacity: 147GB/73GB
  • Rotational Speed: 10000 RPM
  • Interface: Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)
  • Read/Write Seek Time: 4.0ms/4.5ms typ.
  • Acoustic (Idle): 2.9 bels typ.
  • Idle Power Consumption: 4.7W typ. (Best-in-class)
  • Buffer Size: 16MB

The next hard disk drive in this new lineup is the MBC2073/MBC2036, a 2.5” enterprise SAS drive with 15,000PRM rotational
speed offering up to 73GB capacity. This drive also targets mission critical server and storage system applications. This
hard disk drive series will be available in the third quarter of 2007.

  • Capacity: 73GB/36GB
  • Rotational Speed: 15000RPM
  • Interface: Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)
  • Read/Write Seek Time: 3.0ms/3.5ms typ.
  • Acoustic (Idle): 3.2 bels typ.
  • Idle Power Consumption: 5.3W typ. (Best-in-class)
  • Buffer Size: 16MB

The third enterprise class hard disk drive of the new portfolio is the MBA3300/MBA3147/MBA3073 drives, with capacity up to
300GB at rotational speed of 15,000RPM. These drives include a 16MB buffer size for SAS and 4Gbps fibre channel interface
drives, and are targeted toward mission critical applications and systems where high performance and high capacity is required.
This hard disk drive series will be available in the second quarter of 2007.

  • Capacity: 300GB/147GB/73GB
  • Rotational Speed: 15000 RPM
  • Interface: Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) 3G, U320, Fibre Channel 4G
  • Read/Write Seek Time: 3.4ms/3.9ms typ.
  • Acoustic (Idle): 3.6 bels typ.
  • Buffer Size: 16MB SAS/ FC4, 8MB U320

In addition to its enterprise lineup, Fujitsu has introduced the MHW2120BK series 2.5” SATA hard disk drives that will offer
up to 120GB capacity to enable 24/7 operation for a variety of applications, including blade server, telecommunications, surveillance,
industrial PC, and robotic applications. Key features and enhancements include 24/7 operation, built-in functions to minimize
the adverse effects of rotational vibration and a 3.0Gb/sec transfer rate. Offering 7200RPM speed ensures the highest possible
performance available with 2.5” SATA drives today. This hard disk drive series will begin shipping in the third quarter of
2007.

  • Capacity: 120GB/80GB/60GB
  • Rotational Speed: 7200 RPM
  • Interface: SATA 3.0Gb/sec & 1.5Gb/sec
  • Buffer to Host Transfer Rate: 300MB/sec max.
  • Read/Write Seek Time: 10.5ms/12.5ms typ.
  • Track-to-Track Seek Time: 1.5ms typ.
  • Idle Power Consumption: 0.8W typ.
  • Acoustic (Idle): 2.5 bels typ.

¹One gigabyte (GB) = one billion bytes; accessible capacity will be less and actual capacity depends on the operating environment
and formatting.
