IBM Sets New Record for Magnetic Tape Data Density

by storagereview

IBM Research today set a new record in areal data density on linear magnetic tape. IBM Research in cooperation with FUJIFILM recorded data onto an advanced prototype tape at a density of 29.5 billion bits per square inch, or 39 times greater than what industry standard magnetic tapes do today.

The achievement shows that tape technology has a bright future. The newly-discovered technologies are estimated by the researchers to enable cartridge capacities to reach 35TB of uncompressed data, or 44 times greater than the capacity of a current IBM LTO Generation 4 cartridge. Areal densities could reach 100 billion bits per square inch and beyond.
