Iomega Announces eGo External Hard Drives

Iomega has announced a series of desktop and portable external hard drives. The newly-announced models feature USB 3.0 connections and Mac Editions with dual FireWire 800 ports.


Iomega has announced a series of desktop and portable external hard drives. All of the new drives feature a three-year limited warranty.

Portable External Hard Drives

The company announced three new external portable hard drives:

  • SuperSpeed USB 3.0 eGo
  • USB 2.0 Compact Edition eGo
  • 1TB eGo BlackBelt Mac Edition 

The SuperSpeed USB 3.0 drive can transfer data up to ten times faster than USB 2.0; the USB 3.0 interface speed is 5.0Gbps. The SuperSpeed USB 3.0 drive is available in a 500GB capacity and is backwards compatible with USB 2.0. MSRP: $129.99 (500GB)

The USB 2.0 Compact Edition drive is smaller than previous-generation eGo portable external hard drives. It is available in ruby red, midnight blue, and silver colors and in 320GB/500GB/1TB capacities. MSRP: $94.99 (320GB), $114.99 (500GB), $199.99 (1TB).

The 1TB eGo BlackBelt Mac Edition drive features dual FireWire 800 ports and a USB 2.0 port. A backwards-compatible FireWire 800 to 400 cable is included. The drive features Iomega’s Power Grip technology, which helps protect the drive from accidental falls. The BlackBelt drive will be available in June. MSRP: $229.99 (1TB).

External Desktop Hard Drives

Iomega also announced two new series of desktop external hard drives:

  • USB 3.0 eGo 
  • Mac Edition eGo

The USB 3.0 eGo drive is charcoal gray and available in 1TB or 2TB capacities. It is backwards compatible with USB 2.0. MSRP: $149.99 (1TB), $229.99 (2TB).

The Mac Edition eGo features dual FireWire 800 ports and one USB 2.0 port. It comes with the necessary cables, including the backwards-compatible FireWire 800 to 400 cable. It is HSF+ formatted and available in 1TB or 2TB capacities. MSRP: $159.99 (1TB), $249.99 (2TB).

Iomega sells an ExpressCard adapter for notebook computers that do not have USB 2.0 for $39.99; the company also sells a USB 3.0 PCI Express adapter for desktops for $39.99.

Iomega Protection Suite

All eGo external hard drives include the Iomega Protection suite, which includes the following:

  • A complementary 12 month subscription to Trend Micro™ Internet Security for the PC, or Trend Micro™ Smart Surfing software for Mac.
  • Iomega QuikProtect: backup software for simple scheduled file-level backup of data to hard drives and network-attached storage devices (for Windows and Mac desktops and notebooks).
  • EMC® Retrospect® Express software: backup all of your data plus applications and settings (for Windows and Mac desktops and notebooks).
