Design and Build
The Exceria Pro has a standard SD card layout, with a gold branded sticker over its black finish. Basic product information (capacity, maximum read speed, etc.) can be found on the front, and the sliding lock (for prevention of accidental overwrite) can be found on the side of the device.
The back just has the golden connector pins and some more product information.
Performance
In this review, we include the following comparables from our database of memory card reviews:
- Lexar Professional 2000x SD card (32GB)
- SanDisk Extreme PRO SD card (16GB)
- Samsung EVO SD card (32GB)
Using our HP Z620 Consumer Testing Platform, we measured transfer speeds from the Exceria Pro with IOMeter. The Exceria Pro posted great numbers in our 2MB sequential test, with 248.3MB/s read and 171.8MB/s write. This was well above most of the other cards (Extreme PRO posted 180.4MB/s read and 161.4MB/s write, and EVO posted 44.6MB/s read and 19.0MB/s write), with the exception of the 2000x (259.0MB/s read and 177.3MB/s write).
Switching to random large-block transfers, we measured the Exceria at 160.5MB/s read and 9.2MB/s write, which was quite good overall. The 2000x outpaced the Exceria in read with 165.9MB/s, but not in write (6.04MB/s). The Extreme PRO posted 111.7MB/s read and 10.3MB/s write, and the EVO posted 44MB/s read and 31.6MB/s write.
In a random 4K IOPS benchmark, the Exceria posted 2,529.9 IOPS and 146.1 IOPS in read and write, respectively.
Conclusion
The Exceria Pro, Toshiba's latest SD card release, is intended to serve industry professionals that are looking for both high performance and high capacity. Comparable brands offer the lower capacity models (64GB and below) and a lower price, but there are few other performance-focused SD cards that come in a 128GB capacity. It performed very well overall, outpacing most of its comparables with the exception of the Lexar Professional 2000x. It is worth noting, however, that our review unit was the 16GB model, and the 128GB model likely would show a dip in performance. Videographers and photographers would both find the Exceria Pro useful in the most advanced settings, including capturing 4k video as well as burst shooting.
