Seagate has announced it is shipping a new 4TB version of their GoFlex Desk series of external hard drives. The new drive gets an updated look, with a glossy black case and upright design which yields a small footprint on the desk – the rest of the GoFlex Desk line will get the design update soon. The GoFlex Desk for Mac external drive with both FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 will be available in Apple stores by the end of the month.

Aside from the big capacity bump, the 4TB GoFlex Desk also features Seagate’s interchangeable interface adapters. It includes a USB 3.0 interface, but can be upgraded with Thunderbolt, eSATA or other options in the future. The bottom of the case shows a four LED capacity indicator. Seagate also includes automatic backup and encryption software and supports the drive with a two-year warranty.

Seagate did not announce which hard drive is being used inside the case, but if history is any indication, we might assume it’s using a new Seagate hard drive with four 1TB platters. Seagate and others often debut new drive technology in branded products before releasing the drives in bare form.

Pricing and Availability

The 4TB Seagate GoFlex Desk external hard drive is shipping now with an MSRP of $249.99.
