SanDisk made a splash today at the Intel Developers Forum (IDF) where we just happen to be. The company is announcing that it’s teaming with Intel and others to develop and implement a new low-powered SATA-IO standard for SSDs. Called SATA DEVSLP, the initiative aims to reduce the power consumption of high-speed SSDs to as low as 5 mW, down from the current 50 mW state-of-the-art. This is to be accomplished by forcing the SATA device to stay in low-power mode the majority of the time.

Samsung and Microsoft have also signed on to support the development of the new standard, which further signals that the effort has industry support. Success in the effort will likely mean that the trend toward thinner, more powerful portable devices with longer battery life won’t be slowing down any time soon. No timelines or products were announced, but you can bet we’ll be finding out more as IDF rolls on.
