Iomega announced that they completed a new line of external drives, all geared specifically to Mac users. The models include the eGo Mac Edition Portable Hard Drive, the Helium Portable Hard Drive, both of which appeal to the traveling professional, and the Mac Companion Hard Drive, which boasts some awesome new features.
The new eGo has everything you would expect in a good Iomega product. 500 GB and 1 TB options, USB 2.0, Firewire 800 and 400, and a protective cage good for drops of up to 7 feet, for starters. Not requiring an external power source is like icing on the cake. Combined with the slick black finish, the eGo should look good on any desk.
The Helium Portable drive offers similar functionality, but has a more rugged aluminum case. Otherwise it comes in the same 500 GB and 1 TB sizes, doesn’t require external power, but sadly, only supports USB 2.0. Among the features of the Mac Companion Hard Drive are 2- and 3 TB capacities, standard 3.5” disk space, 7200RPM, and a plethora of Firewire and USB ports to connect multiple devices. While impressive, the newest feature, the high-powered fast charging port for iPads and iPhones, steals the spotlight. At present, no other competitor offers anything like this.
All have their own niches, but they all have some things in common as well. 256-bit encryption, a three year warranty, and a variety of data management and protection software come with each. The Helium Portable and Mac Companion drives are currently available in the Apple store, while the eGo is set to be available later this month.
