Texas Memory Systems Unveils Its Flash SAN for High Availability

Texas Memory Systems (TMS) has just launched its first high-availability flash SAN, the RamSan-720. The device features redundant components and failover capabilities for organizations that want the ability to run multiple applications on one system without a single point of failure with either 6 or 12 TB of solid-state capacity. The RamSan-720 is the update to the RamSan-710 array, launched earlier this year in June. Each device has a “two-dimensional flash RAID 5, ”which incorporates chip-level flash RAID within each flash module making it the first RamSan system to support RAID 5 protection across all flash cards.


Texas Memory Systems (TMS) has just launched its first high-availability flash SAN, the RamSan-720. The device features redundant components and failover capabilities for organizations that want the ability to run multiple applications on one system without a single point of failure with either 6 or 12 TB of solid-state capacity. The RamSan-720 is the update to the RamSan-710 array, launched earlier this year in June. Each device has a “two-dimensional flash RAID 5, ”which incorporates chip-level flash RAID within each flash module making it the first RamSan system to support RAID 5 protection across all flash cards.

The new system contains two flash RAID 5 controllers and decentralized RAID across 12 or 24 flash modules with an expansion shelf and its Variable Stripe RAID technology automatically bypasses the failed flash devices if a chip-level RAID fails. The system also uses 300 to 400 watts of power, includes Fibre Channel or InfiniBand connectivity, and claims it can run at 400,000 IOPS.

Texas Memory Systems’ RamSan-720 will be available by the end of January in 2012 and it will be priced at $120,000 for 6 TB and $240,000 for a 12 TB system. Expect Texas Memory Systems to add these high-availability features to their other RamSan systems in the near future.
