iTwin Adds Multi-User Support

by storagereview

Responding to user feature requests, iTwin, Inc. has announced today that its remote file access USB device of the same name will now be able to share files with multiple users. The device looks like a USB flash drive, but it works quite differently. The device is plugged into a Windows or Mac computer and files are “copied” to it. They aren’t really copied, the device has no storage, but they are marked as available for sharing.

The hardware is physically two parts (which is where the name ‘iTwin’ comes from), and you leave half of it in the computer that has the files you want to share. You take the other half to another computer with access to the Internet. After you plug it in, you can transfer the files you designated on the other computer to the oen you’re at now.

Security for the system is in the fact that the two halves of the iTwin need to be mated to one another and that the devices have to be physically plugged in to work. The company provides a means for remotely disabling one half of the device if it’s lost or stolen, and it’s also possible to password protect the device Today’s announcement means that it will be possible to mate multiple iTwin halves to one another. This will be useful for situations where a limited number of people need secure access to a central storage repository accessible via a Windows or Mac computer. Each person will have to be in possession of half an iTwin device that’s been mated to the one plugged into the repository, but it removes issues of files being placed on third-party cloud services like Dropbox.

This upgrade is being offered free to all iTwin owners. The device lists for $99.
