PMC’s 12Gb/s SAS Controllers and RAID-on-Chip Controllers Now Available

PMC has announced the release of its 12Gb/s SAS protocol controllers, RAID-on-Chip (RoC) controllers, and expanders to enable advanced performance and scalability for server and networked storage. High-performance SSDs can deliver upwards to 100 times more IOPS than HDDs, creating the need for a new class of storage controller. PMC’s SAS controllers are capable of 12GB/s and are optimized for performance to satisfy this need by unleashing the full potential of SSDs. PMC’s 12Gb/s solution delivers 40 percent more drive connectivity than its competitors with the addition of the industry’s highest port count expanders; this enables a new generation of scalable tiered storage for corporate and cloud data centers.


PMC has announced the release of its 12Gb/s SAS protocol controllers, RAID-on-Chip (RoC) controllers, and expanders to enable advanced performance and scalability for server and networked storage. Demonstrations of PMC’s Tachyon 12Gb/s SAS controllers have shown well over two million IOPS with a single 16-port controller running small block sequential reads connected to 6Gb/s SAS drives through PMC SAS expanders. PMC’s controllers offer more than double the performance of competition, enabling OEM storage solutions to fully deploy the capabilities of the latest SSDs and improve the performance of large-scale HDD topologies.

Additionally, PMC’s 16-port controller provides twice the port density compared to other solutions. OEMs can double overall storage system capacity when combined with PMC’s 68-port SXP 12G expander, and in doing so, it also reduces components and saves board real estate and power. PMC’s expanders have 40 percent more SAS ports with the ability to scale to support double the number of drives than its competitors’ products. This enables customers to build solutions that can span from entry-level to high-end markets. 12Gb/s SAS delivers the throughput needed for these scale-out architectures.
