In their Q2 2012 quarterly earnings call, Seagate indicated total drive shipments in the quarter that ended in December were roughly 119 million units, which included a pre-flood inventory of 11 million drives. Of those drives, Seagate shipped 47 million, compared to 48.9 million in the same quarter a year ago. Looking forward, Seagate still sees a large industry shortage of up to 100 exabytes, or 150 million units, by the end of this year. Seagate stated that while their factories are mostly online, key suppliers in areas such as drive actuators and motors are still severely impacted, especially with tooling.

Looking forward, Seagate expects to ship 60 million drives this quarter, making roughly 4.3 billion in gross revenue, with operating expenses of roughly $405 million. Supply obviously remains constrained; Seagate has virtually no inventory and launched an auction of 200,000 drives in the quarter to offer a creative solution to the supply problem for customers who weren’t getting enough drive inventory for whatever reason.
Samsung Acquisition
Seagate’s integration of Samsung is nearly complete, with roughly 700,000 Samsung drives shipped in the quarter using Seagate’s global systems. The Samsung SpinPoint M8 was added to Seagate’s product portfolio, delivering industry leading capacity and is a volume leader that will improve Seagate’s position as a 2.5-inch drive supplier.
Hybrid Hard Drives
Seagate currently offers the Momentus XT second generation hybrid drive. Seagate is moving into their third generation hybrid technology and are confident that the market will continue to demand the speed and capacity combination their hybrid drives offer. The third generation hybrid drives will be available this summer.
