Toshiba MKx001GRZB eSSD Wins Energy Efficiency Award

Toshiba has announced their MKx001GRZB enterprise SSD (eSSD) has won a Grand Prize for Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Conservation from the Energy Conservation Center in Japan. The testing took into account not just straight power consumption, but the popular performance per watt, generally measured as IOPS/watt when computing TCO in the enterprise.


Toshiba has announced their MKx001GRZB enterprise SSD (eSSD) has won a Grand Prize for Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Conservation from the Energy Conservation Center in Japan. The testing took into account not just straight power consumption, but the popular performance per watt, generally measured as IOPS/watt when computing TCO in the enterprise.

Highlights from the award report include:

  • In a test with a 70/30 read/write ratio, the MKx001GRZB SSD delivered approximately 250 times improvement in random access performance in terms of IOPS per watt, compared to Toshiba high-speed enterprise hard disk drives.
  • Combined with a low power requirement of only 6.5 Watts during operation, the MKx001GRZB SSD also delivers an industry-leading power efficiency rating of 13,800 IOPS/Watt in random read operations.
  • Used in conjunction with high-speed enterprise HDDs and capacity optimized enterprise HDDs, the MKx001GRZB SSD saves electricity and floor space required for storage systems in cloud computing and data centers, and reduces the electricity use of power-supply and air-conditioning systems of buildings.

Comparatively speaking, we found the SAS-based Toshiba drive to draw more power compared to the SATA-based Micron P300 that also uses SLC NAND. This was primarily because of the 12V and 5V power requirements it had through its SAS interface. In terms of performance per watt, we measured 16,385 IOPS/watt in random 4K read and 3,081 IOPS/watt in random 4K write.
