EMC ITOI 9.0 and Unisphere Remote Announced to Further Simplify IT Management

by Lyle Smith

EMC has announced version 9.0 of its ITOI solution, designed for effective and efficient management of virtual data centers and cloud environments. ITOI 9.0 extends the management capabilities of VMware vCenter Server, delivering complete and unified view into the entire virtual data center infrastructure to its users, including the interrelationships that exist among physical and virtual networking and compute and storage elements. By understanding these relationships while delivering insight distilled from multiple sources into single, customizable view, ITOI 9.0 also accelerates identification and resolution of problems that converged operations management teams need to ensure the delivery and availability of business critical applications and services.

As businesses adopt virtualization to evolve their data center environments, traditional IT operational tools often fail to effectively visualize and understand the complex interrelationships among virtual assets, their underpinning physical elements, and the applications and data sources that relate to them. As a result, this regularly creates "blind spots", forcing IT operations teams to manually aggregate pieces of data from multiple sources in an attempt to identify, understand, and resolve issues in a virtualized data center. When IT infrastructures inevitably become more complex, inefficient operations and inappropriate management tools can affect the availability of infrastructure applications and services and ultimately impact business.

ITOI 9.0 significantly extends and enhances an IT operations management team’s vision and insight into the virtualized data center and cloud environments by simplifying their management and transforming the operator experience. ITOI 9.0 leverages the advanced functionality and capabilities of EMC’s Service Assurance Manager, IP Availability Manager, Server Manager, and MPLS Manager to create a robust, efficient, and unified management solution.

Features of ITOI 9.0:

  • Detailed operational management insight into VMware environments, including cross-domain availability and impact analysis for all VMware-attached storage, and full impact analysis to the virtual machine level.
  • Full visibility into the connectivity and relationships among simple and distributed virtual switches and networks from VMware and Cisco, as well as the ability to understand how problems in virtual switches and virtual networks impact virtual machines and virtualized applications.
  • Enhanced management display visualizations that provide cross-domain notification detail and dashboard-like visibility using a new browser-based console with mash-up capabilities.
  • Enhanced availability management for virtualized applications, including composite applications.
  • Framework for managing Metro Ethernet-based service availability and discovering Metro Ethernet topologies.

EMC has also announced Unisphere Remote, which further extends the simplicity of EMC VNXe unified storage systems for remote or branch office deployments with a new central monitoring capability for EMC Unisphere software. Unisphere Remote is simply installed at its central facility and can monitor over 1,000 remote VNXe storage systems.

Quite often, remote or branch office deployments have little to no storage expertise at remote sites. Unisphere Remote allows users to monitor remote VNXe’s from a central location and add five VNXe’s per minute to the central monitoring console during initial deployment without any remote, manual intervention.

Unisphere Remote Features:

  • Simplicity: Unisphere Remote enables VNXe storage systems in remote or branch office deployments to be monitored from a single console. The new Unisphere feature is available as a free download, delivered as a bundled virtual (VMware) application.
  • Efficiency: Centralized management allows users to track over 1,000 remote VNXe storage systems in real-time. Storage experts are not required at each remote site. Users can configure and add up-to five remote VNXe’s to the central site in just one minute. Once configured, the central site can monitor the VNXe storage systems to track capacity utilizations, VNXe performance data and other VNXe system alarms/alerts related to health and status, thus facilitating overall management tasks, providing faster response and minimizing errors in remedial actions.
