Nexsan has released the NST series unified storage systems that leverage SSDs in both file (NAS) and block-modes (iSCSI). The NST series layers solid state storage with Nexsan’s FASTier acceleration technology over top SATA or SAS interface hard drives. FASTier intelligently uses the speed benefit of the SSDs to accelerate the performance of the higher capacity hard drives, in an integrated system.

While highlighted by software tools like FASTier for caching and tiering, and AutoMAID power management for reduced electrical and cooling costs, NST systems are robust on the hardware side too. NST solutions are available with up to 24 Xeon CPU cores, 192GB of DRAM, 12 dedicated RAID engines and up to 1PB of storage capacity. The Nexsan NST also allows for tremendous density with 15 drive per U of rack space.
Nexsan has also designed the NST storage systems for easy deployment. A GUI complete with wizards make it easy for an IT generalist to set up and maintain one of the systems; in fact setup is quoted at 15 minutes. Additionally the systems are flexible enough to scale up easily without giving up performance.
Aside from raw performance and IO gain when moving to a storage solution with SSD caching, there’s also a cost savings as well from both the reduced capital cost of high speed hard drives and the overall lower system power consumption and thermal output. NST systems are ideally situated for use in virtualization, database and email serving or other remote site use.
