Hitachi has announced that EMC is now shipping the Ultrastar SSD400S SSDs in its Flash-based VNX Unified Storage systems. The EMC VNX solution is designed for mission critical Microsoft and Oracle database environments. The 34nm SLC-based 2.5" SAS interface Hitachi Ultrastar SSD400S was selected for its reliability and endurance for these heavy write intense workloads.
The Ultrastar SSD400S is the product of engineering from both Hitachi and Intel. The SSDs are available with SAS and FC interfaces, delivering sequential speeds of up to 535MB/s read and 500MB/s write with 6Gb/s SAS, and 380MB/s read and 350MB/s write with 4Gb/s FC and up to 46,000 read and 21,000 sustained write IOPS. The 400GB drive offers endurance of 35PB and features power loss management technologies. Other highlights include five year warranty, an error rate of 1 in 1016 and 2 million hours MTBF. The drives draw 1.7W during idle and 5.5W in use. Hitachi has also recently announced a second generation drive in this family, the Ultrastar SSD400S.B, that leverages 25nm SLC NAND.
