Following hot on the heels of their more PC-centric 2TB My Passport portable hard drive with USB 3.0, Western Digital has released a new high-capacity Mac-friendly version of the portable hard drive. The new WD My Passport Studio is the first 2TB portable hard drive designed with Mac users in mind. Much like the 1TB version, the 2TB drives feature a sleek all-metal case that blends well with the MacBook aesthetic and support access via two FireWire 800 and one USB 2.0 port.

Much like the 1TB version, the 2TB drives feature a sleek all-metal case that blends well with the MacBook aesthetic and support access via two FireWire 800 and one USB 2.0 port.
Like the My Passport 2TB, the 2TB My Passport Studio features a 15mm 5400 RPM hard drive inside. Over USB 3.0 we saw throughput of 109 MB/s read and write for the My Passport; while the Studio version offers dual FireWire ports which are great for daisy-chaining hard drives, we would expect modestly slower performance when compared to USB 3.0. To accommodate the taller hard drive, the 2TB My Passport Studio’s enclosure grows a few mm taller, but maintains the same modern styling and durable metal build. The My Passport Studio is bus-powered so no additional power cable is required.
Pricing and Availability
WD’s My Passport Studio 2 TB portable hard drive is available now with an MSRP of $299.99.
