StorONE was founded in 2012, and their focus is on providing low-cost storage through their S1 storage platform, which is the focus of this article. In an amazingly generous and humanitarian gesture, StorOne is allowing all businesses impacted by the coronavirus to use S1 at no cost through June. Healthcare and medical research firms have an even better deal, getting access to their storage platform for no charge through October.

StorONE was founded in 2012, and their focus is on providing low-cost storage through their S1 storage platform, which is the focus of this article. StorONE S1 Storage Platform V3 adds a host of new features. Even more new features than I’m used to seeing from a major update. The first new feature is the ability to move data across multiple tiers of data efficiently. S1 can now transfer data all the way from deep storage to a high-performance (and high cost) NVMe flash drive, or any tier in-between. The second new feature is tiering for snapshots. Previously, only production data could be tiered. The new ability to tier snapshots as well will significantly reduce customers’ costs. However, the real impact likely won’t be felt for months since the company has responded so heroically to the current situation and eliminated all costs for many companies. The third new feature is support for object storage at the volume level via the S3 protocol. Now a single S1-powered storage server can support high-performance (1 million+) IOPS storage running on top of fiber or iSCSI. It can also deliver cost-effective, high-capacity NAS or object storage via NFS, SMB, or S3. More importantly, all these protocols and use cases run under the same storage platform and enjoy the same features and benefits. The fourth and final new feature is really two intertwined features, synchronous replication. S1 now provides asynchronous, semi-synchronous, and synchronous replication of data from one StorONE system to another. Source and target storage clusters can have different drive redundancy settings, snapshot data retention policies, and drive pool types.
In addition to the many new features, the new version of StorONE’s S1 storage software also boasts enhancements to existing features. S1 has boosted their support for NVMe SSDs. S1 can now place NVMe SSDs in a separate drive pool so that administrators can put the high-performance drives in a different drive pool than SAS-based SSDs. If NVMe SSDs are available, the S1 platform will automatically place the S1 metadata on them to further accelerate performance.
