Through a customer communiqué last week, NetApp announced it would be ending its NetApp Kubernetes Service (NKS). On top of that, the company is ending its NKS on HCI & Cloud Volumes on HCI. The services will be discontinued on April 30, 2020.
Through a customer communiqué last week, NetApp announced it would be ending its NetApp Kubernetes Service (NKS). On top of that, the company is ending its NKS on HCI & Cloud Volumes on HCI. The services will be discontinued on April 30, 2020.
Kubernetes is massively popular. Over the course of the last few years, everyone and their brother has jumped on the Kubernetes bandwagon, especially the larger vendors trying to get in on the action. NetApp rolled out their NKS to help customers with Kubernetes portability. NKS allowed customers to build Kubernetes clusters on-premises (NetApp HCI and FlexPod) or in the public cloud (AWS, Azure and GCP). Cloud Volumes (also being shuddered) made file services in clouds usable by containerized applications.
NetApp is imploring customers to migrate off of NKS and related services now. NetApp support is ready to help those that need to migrate their data. So, if you happened to be one of the customers leveraging this service, best to contact support and get migrated onto something else as soon as you can.
NetApp states that it is in no way leaving the Kubernetes market. In fact, they claim that they will be investing more than ever. And the company is working on a way to enable a simplified and unified solution across their entire portfolio. NetApp will support third-party Kubernetes platforms with a distribution-agnostic hybrid infrastructure. The company states that its long-term goal is to have NetApp HCI focus on delivering a software-defined architecture and developing automation and tools around the leading Kubernetes solutions that will be critical to our future strategy.
