EMC announced at the NAB Conference today that EMC Isilon has been adopted as the storage platform for Livestream, a leading provider of live event coverage. EMC also announced that Isilon will remain the preferred scale-out NAS solution of choice for key media partners including Neoscape, The Associated Press, Corus Entertainment, John Wiley & Sons.
Isilon’s scale-out NAS architecture makes it possible for media organizations to add nodes to its NL-Series and X-Series systems to increase capacity and improving performance. With the Isilon OneFS operating system, Livestream has automated management tasks that previously required dedicated effort to manage, from initial media creation to management and production to content delivery and archiving.
Livestream: Live Event Streaming and Rapid-Growing Content Libraries
Livestream provides a platform that allows anyone to broadcast live events – from conferences, music events to movie premieres. Livestream manages 500 terabytes of customer data, with traffic to the site more than doubling in the last year. Over 1.5 billion minutes of video is streamed every month by tens of millions of monthly visitors. This translates to over 80 terabytes of video data per month, an amount its previous managed storage infrastructure could not support.
Livestream needed a way to handle its rapidly growing video library, with over three thousand hours of new video content coming in ever hour. The company selected EMC Isilon scale-out NAS for several reasons: the system’s density allowed Livestream to reduce power, cooling and footprint data center requirements; the ease of management considerably cut administrative efforts; and the much-heightened capacity enabled Livestream to scale up quickly without sacrificing performance and disrupting the user experience.
EMC Isilon Media Partnerships
EMC has a long track record in the broadcast and media industries and a client list to match it. The NAB conference has also been a chance for EMC and its enterprise media partners to reaffirm their partnerships in the public eye:
- Neoscape, a 3D visualization services provider, uses Isilon’s scale-out NAS storage systems to manage its growing volumes of rich media. Neoscape has increased the speed to access files fourfold, providing customers with faster response time.
- The Associated Press, the global news wire, deployed EMC Isilon scale-out NAS in January 2012, to support its high-definition video production and archive workflows. The AP was able to simplify IT management, accelerate access and scale while lowering storage and IT costs.
- Corus Entertainment, an integrated media and entertainment company that owns 27 radio stations and provides specialty and pay television programming across Canada, uses EMC Isilon for a complete storage management solution.
- John Wiley & Sons, publisher, was facing pressure to increase media creation and deployed Isilon’s scale-out NAS storage systems across eight global locations to replace a legacy IT infrastructure, streamline data access and reduce management costs.
