SolarWinds’ Virtualization Manager now allows users to manage both VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V environments from a single pane of glass. Diversification of virtualization tools means that multi-platform virtualization management products have an advantage in the marketplace. While multiple hypervisors within an organization isn’t unusual, SolarWinds is betting that allowing users will be drawn to the simplicity of managing them from a single pane of glass.
The company cites a study from Gabriel Consulting Group finding that 70 percent of users deploy more than one virtualization tool, and more than a quarter use four or more environments. SolarWinds’ own survey indicates that about 85 percent of its customers deploy VMware’s hypervisor, followed by Microsoft Hyper-V at 55 percent.
Given these trends, IT managers may find it appealing to be able to select a management software package and still offer compliance to customers with service-level agreements (SLAs) that require one VM platform or the other.
Improved Troubleshooting and Resource Utilization
Virtualization Manager helps take control of a virtualized environment regardless of size, from the early stages of deployment to implementation of cloud initiatives and IT-as-a-Service. For organizations which need access to analytics and logs without directly maintaining a storage solution, Virtualization Manager allows users to view performance and capacity statistics in-house while opening the platform for contracted administration.
The software also delivers integrated VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V capacity planning, VM sprawl control, performance monitoring, configuration management, and chargeback automation, helping to alleviate user pain points around troubleshooting, downtime and resource utilization across server and storage hypervisors.
Integration with SolarWinds Storage Manager
Virtualization Manager integrates with SolarWinds Storage Manager, allowing users to go beyond the datastore stats to the logical unit number (LUN) for VMware or Hyper-V and ultimately the physical disk level stats, providing VM-to-spindle visibility for troubleshooting.
Pricing and Availability
SolarWinds Virtualization Manager is available now and starts at $2,995, which includes one year of maintenance.
