Smart Storage Systems has introduced the CloudSpeed 500 Server-class SSD built with higher endurance to improve user TCO versus client-class drives used in server environments with a consumption model. With its SMART Guardian Technology, the CloudSpeed 500 delivers up to five times more endurance than server class SSD’s at consumer MLC value by leveraging cost effective consumer grade multi-level cell (MLC) Flash. This allows enterprise-level organizations to extend the working life of their storage and avoid constant SSD replacement.

Smart Storage SSDs have a history of driving great value (such as with the previous XceedStor 500S and XceedIOPS2 models) for enterprise buyers who want to reduce cost without giving up on enterprise features including power and thermal protection; Smart’s newest SSD is no exception. The CloudSpeed 500 offers a full line of enterprise features, including SMART Storage Systems’ third generation backup power circuit technology and a five year warranty.
The main value-add with the CloudSpeed 500 though is the improved endurance over a standard LSI SandForce-powered SSD. Without the Smart-improved firmware, this chipset with consumer MLC NAND would see 3,000 P/E cycles, whereas with the Smart-enhanced firmware, that is extended to 15,000 P/E cycles. By leveraging a strong knowledge around 24nm MLC NAND, Smart is able to characterize and program it to exceed the manufacturer’s endurance claims. This allows Smart to fill another gap between light-workload enterprise SSDs and high-endurance models such as the new Smart Storage Systems Optimus or SLC-based SSDs from other manufacturers.
