CommVault has announced an expanded partnership Microsoft to offer Simpana cloud backup and archival with Windows Azure providing the data storage infrastructure. This increased collaboration will enable CommVault’s customers to benefit from Windows Azure’s economies of scale and flexibility for both storage and computation. Together, CommVault and Microsoft will deliver archiving and backup capabilities for mid and large enterprises with massive amounts of data and long-term retention and compliance requirements.

The announcement also highlights the strategic marketing and sales alliance between the two companies, which will be important as Microsoft builds a market for the Azure platform. CommVault highlights to a recent survey by the Enterprise Strategy Group showing that 74% of surveyed organizations plan to increase spending on cloud computing services in 2012.

Identifying and Saving on ‘Stale’ Data
CommVault’s Simpana software offers integrated source-side deduplication, data encryption and integrated reporting and chargeback capabilities. Simpana also supports backup, recovery and archiving for Microsoft application environments, including Microsoft Files, SharePoint 2010, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL Server and Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V virtualization, whether archiving to on-premises media or in the cloud.

Because cloud storage providers leverage multi-tenant architectures, infrastructure costs are shared across many users. This helps lower costs substantially versus on-site solutions, which require additional provisioning, power, cooling costs, and more. CommVault’s Singular Information Management lowers data management costs, reduces business and compliance risks and is designed to expose management data for better decision making with distributed information access, particularly when primary storage may contain infrequently accessed ‘stale data’ that can be archived to the cloud in order to save on storage costs.

Availability
The data management solution for Windows Azure is available in two configurations: 62 TB of non-geo replicated Azure Storage, or 41 TB of Standard Azure Storage, both starting at $50,000.
