Today, Scality extended their Zenko multi-cloud data controller’s integration with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Long time readers may remember when we covered the initial release of Scality Zenko two years ago, in 2018. Scality was founded in 2009. The company has two primary products. The first is the Zenko multi-cloud controller, which is the focus of today’s article. It is available in open source and enterprise editions. The second is RING, an object storage software platform.

Scality’s latest update of Zenko introduces a way to ingest metadata from existing AWS S3 buckets or NFS mount points. The software can now copy buckets’ and NFS mounts’ attributes as metadata and then exposed to existing management tools. Zenko can search, replicate to the cloud, and manage the lifecycle of the newly available data just like it would for any other Zenko bucket. This new feature can also be trigger by capturing asynchronous updates triggered with existing mechanisms such as the AWS S3 Bucket Notification, Lambda functions, and IAM Policies for enhanced cross-site access control.
One example Scality gives of how the new feature might be used is on an application that supports only storing files on NFS mounts, like a Multimedia Asset Management (MAM) used to handle a catalog of movies. Some of the movies are tagged for “distribution.” Zenko can ingest metadata, discovering the movies with the “distribution” tag. Workflow rules can then be used to copy those objects to remote buckets.
