Today at HPE Discover, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced its new software portfolio, HPE Ezmeral. Ezmeral is said to help companies with their digital transformation and it seems to span across nearly every aspect, including container orchestration and management, AI/ML and data analytics, cost control, IT automation and AI-driven operations, and security. This announcement along with HPE GreenLake cloud services seems to be building out the company’s edge-to-cloud platform-as-a-service strategy.

A lot of tech companies seem to like to have an unusual name with a story behind it. Here, HPE Ezmeral is a derivative of esmeralda, the Spanish word for emerald. Strange name for software you may think. However, HPE sees software and data as a raw emerald and cutting and polishing it to beauty is analogous to the digital transformation. Hence the name.
As mentioned in the HPE GreenLake cloud services news, two of the new services are HPE Ezmeral Container Platform and HPE Ezmeral ML Ops. The HPE Ezmeral Container Platform is said to provide the flexibility to deploy and manage containerized applications at scale on any infrastructure – in enterprise data centers, colocation facilities, multiple public clouds, and at the edge. HPE Ezmeral ML Ops is stated as leveraging containerization to streamline the entire machine learning model lifecycle across on-premises, public cloud, hybrid cloud, and edge environments. The main benefit of this service is to operationalize AI/ML data science projects to make them come to fruition faster while eliminating data silos, seamlessly scaling from pilot to production, and avoiding the costs and risks of moving data.
HPE points out that a key component of Ezmeral, and a place where HPE is actively engaged, is open source. HPE contributes to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and Kubernetes community, with open source projects such as KubeDirector, Secure Production Identity Framework for Everyone (SPIFFE) and SPIFFE Runtime Environment (SPIRE). Open source components of Ezmeral include:
- A key component of the HPE Ezmeral Container Platform is an HPE-contributed open source project, KubeDirector, which provides the ability to run non-cloud-native monolithic applications (i.e., complex, stateful, scale-out application clusters requiring persistent storage) on Kubernetes.
- HPE’s acquisition in February 2020 of Scytale for cloud-native security underscores its commitment to the open source ecosystem, with ongoing contributions to open source projects, including SPIFFE and SPIRE.
- On June 22, CNCF announced that SPIFFE and SPIRE have been promoted from sandbox to incubation-level hosted projects. This is an important development that signifies the continued evolution and market adoption of the projects.
- Since joining CNCF, the SPIFEE and SPIRE projects have grown in popularity and have been deployed by notable companies such as Bloomberg, Bytedance, Pinterest, Square, Uber, and Yahoo Japan. SPIRE has a thriving developer community, with an ongoing flow of commits and merged contributions from organizations such as Amazon, Bloomberg, Google, Hewlett- Packard Enterprise, Pinterest, Square, TransferWise, and Uber.
Availability
HPE Ezmeral software is generally available using traditional license models, including HPE Ezmeral Container Platform and HPE Ezmeral ML Ops as a software license subscription to run on any infrastructure or public cloud. HPE Ezmeral Container Platform and HPE Ezmeral ML Ops are available now in beta as cloud services through HPE GreenLake, and accepting customers for the beta program, with general availability scheduled for HPE Q4.
