EMC Announces New Data Domain and Avamar Backup and Recovery Solutions

by Mark Kidd

At EMC World 2012, EMC announced new Data Domain and Avamar systems and software for high-performance, scalable backup appliances that tightly integrate with each other, with backup software, and into heterogeneous enterprise application ecosystems. The arrival of data deduplication technology enabled today’s high-performance purpose-built backup appliances to address legacy issues of backup window times and slow and unreliable tape-based recoveries. Now cloud and big data are again transforming IT environments.

The arrival of data deduplication technology enabled today’s high-performance purpose-built backup appliances to address legacy issues of backup window times and slow and unreliable tape-based recoveries. Now cloud and big data are again transforming IT environments.

EMC’s new Data Domain DD990 deduplication storage system is specified at 6x faster and 3x greater maximum capacity than its nearest competitor. The Avamar 6.1 deduplication software and system will offer the industry’s fastest backup and recovery performance for VMware environments, improving on the performance levels of its nearest competitor by 3x on backups and up to 30x on recoveries. Avamar 6.1 also provides new support for integration with SAP, Sybase and Microsoft SQL Server 2012 and enhanced support for Oracle plus expanded Microsoft Hyper-V features.

The updated Data Domain software brings new assets to the Data Domain family including archiving capabilities for extended retention and regulatory compliance, expanding the Data Domain Boost ecosystem and strengthening the Data Domain Data Invulnerability Architecture.
