Today SK hynix announced the release of the first 128-layer NAND consumer SSD in the SK hynix Gold P31. This marks an expansion of the company’s consumer SSD presence in the United States, this is the first consumer-facing PCIe SSD launched in the U.S. under the SK hynix brand. The drive will leverage the NVMe interface.
First up let’s relieve some confusion around the naming. While this drive was first announced back at CES in January (when things still happened, weird right), the company already had a Gold SSD. The previously named Gold S31 is a SATA drive while this one released today is a PCIe/NVMe drive. A bit confusing, but make sure you check whether there is a P or an S before purchasing.
The SK hynix Gold P31 is aimed at PC users looking for more performance such as gamers, designers, and content creators. The drive is said to hit speeds up to 3.5GB/s with a MTBF of 1.5 million hours as well as a five-year warranty. The 4D NAND SSD comes in 50GB ($75) and 1TB ($135) capacities.
