VMware rolled out several updates earlier this morning. Dell Technologies followed suit with its own HCI portfolio, but more tightly integrating VMware with VxRail. Further pressing into the new capabilities and features released by VMware, Dell is also announcing Dell EMC ObjectScale Early Access for a select number of its customers.
According to Dell, many customers are looking to deploy object storage to support cloud-native apps without procuring and managing additional storage systems. At the same time, VMware is delivering object storage technology, that uses a cloud operating model at scale, with VMware Cloud Foundation with VMware Tanzu. This is being done through innovations in both VMware vSphere and VMware vSAN, including the integration of Kubernetes into vSphere.
Today, Dell is building off of the above and working with their friends at VMware to roll out Dell EMC ObjectScale. ObjectScale is an object storage platform that takes advantage of Kubernetes’ native automated deployment, scaling, and management capabilities. The new platform can be deployed on existing ESXi-virtualized infrastructure and is managed from the familiar vSphere UI. Dell goes on to state that ObjectScale is S3 compatible and contains self-service APIs that can be used by developers to quickly spin up object storage containers to fuel everything from big data and analytics applications to ephemeral dev/test sandboxes.
Going back to our earlier point, Dell EMC ObjectScale enables organizations to deliver scalable cloud services with the reliability and control of private cloud infrastructure. Globally distributed storage infrastructure can easily be managed by IT under a single namespace. For superior performance in both large and small objects, the platform has the following design principals: a global namespace with eventual consistency, scale-out capabilities, and secure multi-tenancy. To hit both high-availability and to be horizontally scalable across all nodes, ObjectScale has every function in the system built as an independent layer. The cloud storage service aspect is delivered by running the software on VMware nodes with vSAN.
Dell EMC ObjectScale Early Access Availability
Dell EMC ObjectScale Early Access is expected to be available soon to enterprise customers in beta on VMware Cloud Foundation with Tanzu.
