EMC DLm8000 Mainframe Virtual Tape Library Delivers Synchronous Replication

by Brian Beeler

EMC has announced the DLm8000, their latest high-end mainframe family of virtual tape libraries. The DLm8000 is highlighted by support for EMC VMAX and EMC Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) synchronous replication. The system also boasts a 2.5X improvement in performance over the nearest competitor (read: IBM).

The synchronous replication feature is a first in the industry, where IBM and others only offer asynchronous synchronization. This feature alone is a game changer for certain large enterprise users, like those in the financial and insurance industries, where 100% uptime and zero data loss are not only critical for business reasons, but compliance and regulatory reasons as well. Synchronous replication allows for concurrent writes to two separate data centers to mitigate such concerns making disaster recovery with predictable Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) a reality.

In addition to included support for VMAX, a first for EMC’s Disk Library for mainframe, the EMC z/OS Storage Manager (EzSM) is also supported, offering a common management interface for both VMAX and DLm. The net result is a mainframe-centric view of storage including VMAX monitoring and DLm management functions like;

  • Configure, View, Monitor SRDF
  • Discover and Monitor DLm Devices
  • Import and Export Tapes
  • Set Configuration Options
  • Display Configuration Information
  • Initialize virtual cartridges

DLm8000 Product Highlights

  • 1.7PB of VMAX storage
  • Throughput of up to 2.7 GB/s throughput
  • Continuous replication to the DR site means data is immediately available to provide rapid RTOs and more flexible RPOs
  • Support for up to 2,048 emulated drives
  • 16 FICON attachments
  • SRDF for tape replication
  • EzSM management
