Plextor Launches M5P SSD, First to Market with New Marvell 9187 Controller

by Brian Beeler

Plextor has announced their latest enthusiast-grade SSD offering, the PX-M5P. The first SSD to hit the market with Marvell’s latest generation SSD controller, the M5P promises some of the biggest single drive performance yet, with random read IOPS of 94,000 and write performance of 86,000 IOPS.  Sequential read/write speeds weigh in up to 540/450 MB/s. While just announced today, we’ve already started our review and early benchmark performance shows the M5P will likely be among the fastest consumer SSDs available. The M5 Pro SSD comes in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacities and each is paired with a 5-year warranty.

While designed as a client drive, Plextor has historically tried to provide more than what consumers need from an SSD and the M5P is no different. Plextor is pitching "double-data protection technology" in the M5P. The first component includes 128-bit error correction in the Marvell 9187 controller. The second is via read protection offered by the hold-out algorithm in Plextor’s firmware, allowing the drive to provide complete data accuracy. The drive also provides 256-bit full-drive encryption.
