Quest Software has announced vRanger 6.0, the latest version of the company’s virtual data protection solution, which will now also offer backup and restore for physical Windows servers. vRanger 6.0 will be generally available in the fourth quarter of 2012, and will open a path to backup platform consolidation for Quest clients that must support applications hosted on physical infrastructure in addition to virtual hosts.
Quest Software has announced vRanger 6.0, the latest version of the company’s virtual data protection solution, which will now also offer backup and restore for physical Windows servers. vRanger 6.0 will be generally available in the fourth quarter of 2012, and will open a path to backup platform consolidation for Quest clients that must support applications hosted on physical infrastructure in addition to virtual hosts.
In support of this new functionality, Quest cites the results of a recent survey the company conducted in which 86 percent of respondents reported using two or more backup products to protect their physical and virtual machines. Previously VMware Ready certified for vSphere 5, vRanger 6.0 now adds support for Windows Server 2003 and 2008, and will support Windows Server 2012 upon release.
vRanger 6.0 will also provide application-consistent snapshot backups for Microsoft applications including Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint, and Active Directory via Microsoft VSS. vRanger 6.0 adds French and German language support.
Physical Backup Features
vRanger 6.0 enables physical server backup via distributed agents that send data directly from source to repository in order to eliminate bottlenecks in the backup process.
The new physical backup functionality also leverages vRanger’s virtual backup technology to provide a number of additional features:
- Online backups to eliminate the impact of the backup window on production applications
- Full, incremental, and differential backups
- Quest’s Active Block Mapping technology which reduces backup time and space requirements by reading and writing only active blocks
- Resource management that enables users to optimize job results by dialing performance up or down in accordance with available resources and bandwidth
- Native cataloging which allows users to find and recover files quickly with keyword and wildcard searches
Pricing and Availability
vRanger 6.0 will be generally available in the fourth quarter of 2012. Licenses for virtual machines will be priced at $769 per CPU and licenses for physical servers at $300 per server.
