This week, GIGABYTE Technology announced two new rack servers that come with expanded DIMM slots as well as a new internal storage/expansion slot. The two new servers are the R162-ZA0 and R262-ZA0, designed for data centers and virtualization, and do so with cost savings, generational improvements, and server space maximization. The servers will feature 2nd gen AMD EPYC processors.

The two new servers are the R162-ZA0 and R262-ZA0, designed for data centers and virtualization, and do so with cost savings, generational improvements, and server space maximization. The servers will feature 2nd gen AMD EPYC processors.
The industry standard for DIMM slots is 8. Now, GIGABYTE is expanding that to 16 but they state the maximum memory bandwidth will still be able to be maintained through a balanced memory configuration. One of the driving forces behind the expanded DIMM capacity is the ability to leverage lower-cost DIMMs while maintaining the capacity of 8 DIMMs. Another benefit is the ability to scale up as needed.
The first server we’ll going to look at is the GIGABYTE R162-ZA0. This rack server only has 4 bays in the front (3.5” or 2.5” drives supported, SAS or SATA) on one AMD EPYC CPU in a 1U form factor. The smaller server does allow for 16 DIMMs at the cost of a PCIe expansion lost. Though the server still has two PCIe slots (Gen 4 x16, FHHL) in the rear. There is also one M.2 Gen 4×4 slot.
The other server, the R262-ZA0, is a 2U server with more storage, up to 40 2.5” bays, enabled through a SAS card) and two U.2 bays. The server has 24 bays across the front, ten in the back, and an internal 8-bay solution that pops up for loading. This server supports a single AMD EPYC CPU and 16 DIMMs of 3200MHz DDR4. Even after all of the storage, there is still room for two PCIe FHHL expansion slots and a single OCP 3.0 Gen 4 x16 mezzanine slot.
