Mellanox has announced the availability of Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) drivers for its end-to-end FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand and 10/40GbE solutions over VMware ESXi 5.1, delivering a sustainable bandwidth rate of up to 48Gb/s of bandwidth to storage per VM and less than 2us for VM-to-VM interconnect latency. Mellanox has also shown new tests that indicate a sustained throughput of more than 37Gb/s using servers equipped with Mellanox’s ConnectX-3 40GbE NICs connected by SwitchX 40GbE switches and Mellanox QSFP cables. Mellanox’s 40GbE solutions are designed to maximize the number of Virtual Machines (VMs) that can be sustained on each server.

Mellanox’s 40GbE interconnect solution includes a SwitchX-based SX1036 36-port 40GbE switch, with 220ns latency and 2.88Tb/s of non-blocking throughput, and ConnectX-3 40GbE NICs with NIC virtualization. Mellanox I/O virtualization for VMware ESXi 5.1 offloads I/O functions to hardware, freeing CPU cycles for applications. Hardware isolation of virtual machine I/O in a multitenant environment also offers improved QoS and security.
VSA Virtual SAN Appliance
Mellanox also announced the availability of a new RDMA-based virtual SAN software appliance that leverages server hardware with local storage and SSDs to form large-scale, virtual storage networks. The Mellanox VSA vSAN software appliance supports iSCSI and hardware-accelerated iSCSI, provides centralized cluster management for multiple virtual appliances, and can be managed through VMware vCenter via a plug-in. The VSA vSAN Appliance can also act as a virtual fibre channel SAN gateway to integrate with legacy SANs.
According to Mellanox, the VSA vSAN appliance can help a single VM client achieve 190,000 IOPS and 5 GB/s bandwidth, and deliver 6 GB/s with a single RDMA adapter, or 12 GB/s with two adapters to serve a total of more than 1,000,000 IOPS.
