Western Digital has announced that it’s expanding its selection of high capacity and high speed external storage solutions for Mac and PC users with the introduction of the My Book Thunderbolt Duo 8TB and My Book 4TB external hard drive models. Which 4TB hard drive is WD using though? Interesting question as WD hasn’t released a consumer 4TB hard drive yet. While such drives often start in branded products like these, this time WD is leveraging it’s new Hitachi GST acquisition by using a HGST 4TB in these refreshed products.

The My Book Thunderbolt Duo 8TB (the 6TB model previously reviewed) is designed specifically for the creative pros and Mac users in mind who work with large multimedia files such as high-resolution photos and HD videos. As an added convenience, it will ship with a Thunderbolt cable. Its dual Thunderbolt ports also enable daisy-chaining of up to six My Book Thunderbolt Duo drives (e.g. 48TB using six Thunderbolt Duo 8TB drives) or with other high performance peripherals, such as HD monitors, media players, and video / audio editors.
The new WD My Book 4TB desktop drive (3TB My Book Studio review) takes full advantage of USB 3.0 connection allowing PC users to back up files 3 times faster than USB 2.0; however, it is compatible with PCs and notebook computers that use USB 2.0. The My Book 4TB drive (also available in 1TB, 2TB and 3TB capacities) will be out-of-the-box compatible with the new Windows 8 operating system.
The My Book 3.0 4TB drive also includes the automatic and continuous backup of all content generated on your computer. In addition, it also offers password protection and hardware encryption to provide additional security against unauthorized access to data.
