The iXsystems Titan iX-316J is a 3U storage expansion shelf (JBOD). The iX-316J features 16 hot swappable 3.5" SAS/SATA drive bays across the front, capable of supporting up to 64TB of raw storage with 4TB hard drives. The unit also includes a pair of high-efficiency 1200W power supplies (1+1) and offers fault tolerance via redundant SAS2 (SFF-8088) expander bays.

In this video preview we’re using 16 Hitachi Ultrastar 7K4000 hard drives, broken into four virtual disks in Windows Server 2012. The JBOD connects to a Supermicro server via LSI 9207-8e SAS expander. In early performance testing we’re seeing impressive results given the 7,200 RPM hard drives being tested. Sequential performance with large-block transfers measures around 2GB/s read and 1GB/s write with 1MB transfers, with 8K sequential showing performance in the range of 17,000 IOPS write and over 150,000 IOPS read.
Stay tuned for our upcoming review of the iXsystems Titan iX-316J as well as upcoming projects which will incorporate this JBOD platform for large-scale storage fileserver and caching solutions.
