Netgear Announces Three 10GbE ProSafe SMB Switches

by Mark Kidd

Netgear has announced three new 10 Gigabit switch solutions for small and medium business networks with fewer than 500 users. 10 Gigabit network connectivity is still unusual for SMB due to the expense of 10 Gigabit-capable equipment and a lack of solutions designed for smaller deployments. Each of Netgear’s new solutions utilizes 10GBASE-T Copper and ranges in cost from $125 per port to $250 per port.

10GBASE-T technology operates over familiar Cat6A and Cat7 copper cable with lower barriers to adoption than 10GbE fiber. Backward compatibility with existing Gigabit and 100-Megabit infrastructure also enables progressive network upgrades. Citing a report from Crehan Research, Netgear anticipates that the majority of servers will ship with 10GE in 2013 (fiber & copper), and that a majority servers will ship with 10GBASE-T in 2014.

24-Port ProSafe M7100 Series

The ProSafe XSM7224, part of Netgear’s M7100 series, is intended for installations requiring a top-of-rack server access layer in enterprise and campus-style networks or high-density, high-performance 10GbE aggregation. The M7100 series is fully managed and offers four ports of SFP+ interfaces for 1GbE/10GbE fiber uplinks and other DAC connections. The M7100 series also offers auto-iSCSI optimization, private VLANs, and Local Proxy ARP.

12-Port ProSafe XS712T

The XS712T provides twelve 10GbE ports and two shared 10GbE fiber SFP+ ports along with a web interface to manage its Layer 2 features. The XS712T features VLAN and dynamic VLAN support for traffic segmentation with double-tagging, QoS for traffic prioritization, advanced security, and IGMP snooping. Netgear has designed the XS712T for use as the core switch in smaller networks or as an aggregation switch in larger networks.

8-Port ProSafe XS708E

Netgear’s XS708E features eight 10GbE ports and one shared 10G fiber SFP+ port along with simple Layer 2 functionality. The XS708E’s management interface allows the administrator to configure VLAN support, QoS, IGMP snooping, port trunking, rate limiting, and traffic monitoring.

All ProSafe switches are backed by Netgear’s lifetime hardware warranty with 24×7 technical support. The M7100 series also includes ProSupport Lifetime 24×7 advanced technical support and 3-year, next business day onsite hardware replacement.
