Hitachi Data Systems announced its integrated Hitachi Data Instance Manager (HDIM) software that maps and enhances copies of data throughout the data lifecycle and is designed for midmarket and larger enterprises. With HDIM, businesses can form an information protection strategy that matches their company’s use cases, as opposed to trying to fit within an existing strategy. HDIM streamlines and creates efficiency in backup, versioning, replication, dedupe, archiving and continuous data protection. Hitachi also announced that later in the year it will integrate HDIM with Hitachi Content Platform to enable better archiving, search and recovery, and improved data analysis.

Hitachi formulated HDIM around the idea that organizations typically don’t have access to information about data copies – they aren’t sure who created the copies, how they were created and for which use case the copy exists. Organizations also contend with massively increasing data, the virtualization of their systems, and for some the need to meet regulatory and compliance standards. HDIM’s features enable organizations to more easily understand their current protection strategy to restructure or enhance it to fit their needs.
HDIM removes superflous data copies by capturing and copying data in real-time. The data is then recoverable across various recovery points in time. HDIM completes its work for data copies for file, SQL and Exchange in either Microsoft or Linux. HDS plans further support in the future and will also continue to integrate their software.
While HDIM is a new Hitachi offering, Hitachi has plenty of existing data protection software. Hitachi Applications Protector is snapshot-based protection in one management window that is designed for use with Exchange, SQL and SharePoint. Also offered is Hitachi Replication Manager which enables users to manage HDS array-based replications. Rounding out the offerings is Hitachi Data Protection Suite, powered by CommVault, which integrates snapshots, replication and persistent copies.
