HGST Travelstar Z5K1000 Announced; Ships Over 100 Million 7mm 2.5-Inch Mobile Hard Drives

by Brian Beeler

HGST has announced the Travelstar Z5K1000, its new 2.5-inch 1TB drive and the industry’s fastest 7.0 mm 5,400 RPM HDD with best-in-class shock robustness for thin, ultra-portable laptops, Ultrabooks, external storage, and ultra-compact CE devices. HGST’s 7.0 mm Z-series HDD product line features common connectors and mounting points for easy integration into existing systems, which enables greater design flexibility for new thinner, lighter, and more robust consumer electronics devices.

The Travelstar Z5K1000 mobile HDD comes with 1TB of capacity in true 7.0mm format, an industry-standard 6Gb/s SATA interface, an ultrafast 3.0 second boot time, and 32MB cache, offering manufacturers the features essential for designing thinner systems. Additionally, HGST’s new Z-series drive is 26 percent slimmer in z-height compared to traditional 9.5mm 2.5-inch drives and weighs only 95 grams. This gives OEMs and integrators the opportunity to differentiate product lines by utilizing space savings to produce thinner, lighter devices, add battery capacity, increase shock robustness, and improve internal airflow.

The Travelstar Z5K1000 features 1.6W read/write power and 0.5W low-power idle, while delivering virtually silent operation with its 2.1 idle/2.2 seek bels. In addition, it offers protection against bumps and bruises with an operating shock at 400G/2ms and non-operating shock at 1000G/1ms. A dual-stage actuator is included for track miss registration improvements for greater data integrity and reliability, as well as Advanced Format and advanced error correction capabilities.

HGST’s new Z-series drive is the seventh generation of self-encrypting drive (SED) to feature HGST’s Bulk Data Encryption, making it a highly attractive option for companies that routinely carry sensitive information on their portable devices. The SED encrypts data using protected keys in real time and is designed to the Opal specification established by the Trusted Computing Group; this provides users with the highest level of data-protection available. Additionally, it speeds and simplifies drive re-purposing. By deleting the encryption key, the data on the drive is rendered unreadable, thereby eliminating the need for time-consuming data-overwrite.

Also as part of this announcement, HGST has also that it has reached the milestone of over 100 million Travelstar Z-series (7.0-mm 2.5-HDDs) shipped, quite the milestone for mobile drive shipments.

Availability

The Travelstar Z5K1000 family ships in 1TB and 750GB capacities and is currently qualifying with select OEMs. Broader qualification samples are now available, with channel distribution scheduled in November.
