Seagate has announced that it has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Baidu–China’s largest web services firm–in the industries of low-cost online storage, archiving, and Big Data analysis.

The agreement states that Baidu will give priority to Seagate products when considering components for all of their future servers and storage facilities. Seagate will then align with Baidu as a Strategic Customer, giving priority to the Chinese company when providing enterprise storage products and relevant support. Seagate will maintain a dedicated engineering team for Baidu during their partnership.

Seagate will supply enterprise capacity and performance products as part of their agreement as well. Additionally, the collaboration will allow for joint research in new technology projects for Cold Storage, Big Data analysis, and Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR), the latter which enables data to be put closer together on a disk drive, creating an increase of 25 percent more data per platter without compromising data integrity or reliability.

This agreement will allow Seagate and Baidu to establish a strategic partnership between the two companies on a worldwide basis in order to address the various challenges of data storage in the Big Data environments.
