Samsung has announced that it has started mass producing the SM1715 3.2TB NVMe PCIe solid state drive based on the company’s 3D V-NAND flash memory technology, which is specifically designed for high-end enterprise server systems. Samsung has indicated that it SM1715 will accelerate the transition to the NVMe interface in the premium server sector, all the while expanding its 3D V-NAND SSD business to offer drives with more than 3TB of storage.

The SM1715 is the direct successor to the XS1715, improving on its drive performance and reliability. In addition, the new SM1715 SSD leverages Samsung’s proprietary 3D V-NAND in an HHHL (half-height, half-length) card-type form factor, allowing it to offer the substantial storage capacity, double Samsung’s previous highest NVMe SSD density of 1.6TB.

Samsung quotes their new SSD to deliver sequential read and write speeds of 3,000MB/s and 2,200MB/s respectively with random reads up to 750,000 IOPS and random writes up to 130,000 IOPS. The 3.2TB SM1715 is also designed with 10 DWPDs for five years, which provides a level of reliability required by enterprise server manufacturers.

The SM1715 comes in capacities of 1.6TB and 3.2TB. Directed availability is expected soon.
