IBM announced today that it has a new strategic technology service with Anthem Inc. The deal is valued at $500 million USD and will run for the next five years. IBM will provide Anthem with operational services for their mainframe and data center server, as well as provide operation services for Anthem's storage infrastructure.
Anthem (formally WellPoint) is one of the leading health benefits companies in the United States, and the largest for-profit managed health care company in the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. Anthem serves "69 million people through its affiliated companies, including more than 37 million enrolled in its family of health plans." As the company continues to grow it plans on leveraging technology, such IBM's operation services, to simplify the health care process while improving the quality of health care.
As part of the agreement, Anthem will be able to leverage IBM's Cloud solutions to increase the ease, availability, and speed of adding infrastructure to support Anthem's growing business requirements such as launching new products for plan members and rapidly responding to market demands. IBM will offer their new cloud orchestration capabilities to integrate cloud infrastructure, off-premise or on-premise, into its existing data center environment. Anthem will be able to consolidate its infrastructure onto a consistent, flexible platform with the ability to scale to meet business needs.
The collaboration between the companies will help Anthem provide better health care processes and quality to their customers while further fueling IBM's growth in the cloud marketplace.
